Year after year, NHI at Tip of Texas has been fortunate enough to have students from across the city of Brownsville demonstrate an interest in assuming leadership roles within the organization. However, out of the consistently-competitive pool of nearly 60 applicants, we are only able to select one of them to serve as the Head Coach of the region.
After reviewing students’ applications, conducting interviews, taking into consideration the opinion of our volunteers (this person received a majority vote), and deliberating extensively, it is with great pleasure that we announce that the selection panel has unanimously selected Carolina Vela to serve as the Head Coach of the National Hispanic Institute at Tip of Texas for the 2020-2021 season.
Carolina Vela is a senior at Saint Joseph Academy, where she participates in multiple extracurricular activities including Model UN, National Honor Society, and Marist Youth. She has been involved with NHI at Tip of Texas since her freshman year, when she participated and was a Sweet 16 Finalist at the 2018 Texas Great Debate. In 2018, she participated in the National Lorenzo De Zavala Youth Legislative Session. She has served as a coach in Extemporaneous Speaking throughout her high school career, most recently as the Head Coach of the category.
“I want to express my thanks to the Tip of Texas region for this honor” Vela said. “As Head Coach, I will serve this dedicated team to the best of my ability just as those who came before me. Despite the challenges that we are facing, I am eager to help the leadership team create a successful year for our talented coaching staff and the new participants.”
